Martin and Kathy, you have just turned the legions of ‘Spotters’ collectively green. What is more this was your first game drive at Kicheche Mara Camp, frankly an obscene amount of good fortune.
Some things are just not meant to happen: team Oracle winning last week in San Francisco, sandals and socks, pineapple on pizza and dressage. But a cruiserweight male leopard being vanquished by a wildebeest cow?
Mara North Conservancy delivered in industrial spades last week as this couple watched a male leopard take down, then lose a wildebeest calf just a few minutes from camp with Benja. There are records of buffalo and topi protecting their young but seldom of wildebeest doing the same.
The leopard had a killing grip on its prey but the mother’s protection racket was too hot for a cat that was hardly on the verge of starvation.
Martin, your images are superb, Kathy your footage is perhaps even better. Don’t be shy in forwarding this link to everyone you know.
