Laikipia DistrictDespite being a non-protected area the wildlife in Laikipia is abundant and total numbers are higher than any of Kenya's National Parks and Reserves except the Masai Mara. The Laikipia-Ewaso eco-system is the largest in Kenya at over 40,000 sq kms. Over 6,000 elephants migrate within this system and 250 wild dog, the worlds 4th largest population. The district is home to endangered species such as; the black rhino, over half of Kenya's black rhinos reside in Laikipia, and Grevy's zebra, 70% of the world's population occur here. Ol Pejeta ConservancySituated on the equator, in Laikipia District, between the foot hills of the Aberdares and the magnificent snow capped Mt Kenya, Ol Pejeta Conservancy boasts and astounding variety of animals. The combination of amazing wildlife and stunning views across the plains of Ol Pejeta guarantes an unforgettable safari experience. Ol Pejeta is a private Conservancy offering 90,000 acres of wilderness and and an incredibly uncrowded environment to enjoy quality game viewing. The Conservancy is home to Kenya's largest population of Black Rhino, large numbers of elephant, cheetah, lion, leopard and plentiful plains game. There are also a number of rarer Northern species such as Grevys Zebra, Jacksons Hartebeest and Beisa Oryx. As the biggest Black Rhino Sanctuary in East Africa, Ol Pejeta Conservancy is home to 74 Black Rhinos after the single largest rhino translocation ever undertaken in East Africa in 2007. There are ongoing Research Programs on the Conservancy such as the Lion Research upon which visitors are offered a unique opportunity to spend a morning with the Conservancy predator research team. Community Outreach Program; focuses on the following core areas; health, education, water, roads, agricultural extension and community based eco-tourism, are central to Ol Pejeta Conservancy's mission. Visitors can be taken on visits to schools, medical dispensary's and water projects. |
