Laikipia camp

Laikipia Camp is a small luxurious tented camp, nestled at the foot of indigenous forest overlooking a waterhole, in the centre of the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. It's twelve guests are hosted by the inimitable Andy and Sonja Webb. See Map.

Accommodation

The camp consists of six luxurious tents The tents are custom designed and are fully insect-proof with en-suite bathrooms equipped with a dresser, flushing toilet and hot showers. There are comfortable chairs on each verandah overlooking the waterhole. One tent can be converted into a triple on request. There is a spacious well furnished lounge and dining tent, although we prefer to eat alfresco if weather permits.

Location

The Ol Pejeta Conservancy is 90,000 acres of wilderness and offers an incredibly uncrowded environment to enjoy quality game viewing. The Conservancy is home to Kenya's largest population of Black Rhino, large numbers of elephant, cheetah, lion, leopard and plentiful plains game. There are also a number of rarer Northern species such as Grevys Zebra, Jacksons Hartebeest and Beisa Oryx. The Conservancy lies on the Equator 30 minutes drive from Nanyuki airstrip and affords wonderful views of Mt Kenya.

Activities

We offer a full selection of game-viewing activities including Day Game Drives, Night Game Drives which focus on nocturnal species not seen on regular day drives. Interpretative Game Walks are another activity permitted on the Conservancy.
There is also a Lion Tracking program which monitors the lions of the area (some have been collared with receivers). As part of the program we are able to track the lions with a portable satellite dish and remit the data to the study centre.

For those who like to experience their game viewing differently, we are able to offer Horse back safari's within the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. We commence the 3 to 4 hour trek from a small undeveloped camp site on the Ngobit river on the southern boundary of the conservancy. While riding across rolling open plains, with the spectacular snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya as a backdrop, the game spotted will be plentiful. Herds of zebra, giraffe, gazelle and even encounters with the predators such as cheetah are not uncommon.
In addition, the Wildlife Educational Centre is interesting for both children and adults alike, and the Chimpanzee Sanctuary for orphaned chimps is an excellent venue to observe the two families and learn about the perils facing chimpanzees in the wild.
